Platanen am Deich: Citizens' initiative is fighting impending precipitation!

Neustadt, Deutschland - The plane trees on the Neustädter Weserdeich are again a hot topic of discussion. A few months ago, the crowns of the trees were drastically trimmed, and the citizens' initiative "Platanne am Deich" is not very pleased with the measures of the environmental authority. This is planning a redesign of the city route between the railway bridge and Piepe, and in the course of this, most of the 136 plane trees should give way. The Bremen Senate has decided that the felling is necessary to ensure flood protection. The final felling of the trees is already considered in 2028, while the current pruning is considered a temporary measure. This pruning is currently the third in the past ten years, with the last campaign in 2019.

The citizens' initiative is clearly against these plans and sees the pruning as a "mutilation regardless of losses". It is particularly critically noted that this intervention was carried out during the breeding and setting time. However, a spokeswoman for Senator Kathrin Moosdorf (Greens) defends the measures and explains that they are necessary for reasons of traffic safety. The authority also emphasizes that the pruning takes place to the extent permitted.

criticism and protest

The dispute between the citizens' initiative and the environmental authority has been in existence for years. The initiative actively campaigned with around 1,500 signatures against the felling and called a petition committee of the citizens. Although the citizens' initiative has collected 24,000 signatures against the precipitation, the referendum was classified as inadmissible by the environmental and interior department. However, the State Court is currently examining the admissibility of this referendum. If it is declared admissible, the initiative plans to make a decision in parallel to the European elections in June 2024.

An alternative proposal from the CDM Smith office could possibly avoid the felling of the plane trees. However, the Senate considers the tree felling necessary because the trees could be uprooted in the event of storm and floods, which is a considerable danger to the new town. Despite this reasoning, the citizens' initiative remains active and even examines legal steps, such as a short -term injunction against the environmental authority.

The conflict for the plane trees on the dike makes it clear how important the dialogue between citizens' initiatives and the authorities is to find solutions that take into account both flood protection and the preservation of nature in Bremen Neustadt.
