Attractive future for the Weseruferpark: redesign from 2026!
The upcoming redesign of the Weserbank parks in Rablinghausen shows that the people of Bremen care about their waterfront park. A master plan from September 2022 outlines measures that are intended to significantly improve the quality of stay, road safety and accessibility. The focus is on the area around the event center on the headland, where construction work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
What is the current condition of the park? The paths in the Weseruferpark are not barrier-free; They are more like trails, which is a real obstacle for many users. In addition, the seating, especially the bench walls, are very dilapidated and hardly offer the desired quality of stay. The poplar roundel in particular does not invite you to linger. The maritime nautical signs that are currently spread around the park are to be removed as they incur high maintenance costs and are potentially dangerous for children playing.
Planned changes and redesign
One of the main measures in the course of the redesign is the removal of these navigation marks. However, works of art such as the “anchor bundling” and a large wooden cross remain. What is particularly pleasing is that the wooden cross will remain where it is after a signature drive that received 252 votes supported it. Around 7,270 square meters are earmarked for the renovation, and the existing trail will be converted into a regular, barrier-free path.
It will also be exciting when two existing trees will be removed to make room for the planting of eight new trees, including quaking aspens. In addition, two new barrier-free benches will be installed at the radar tower as well as benches in a fresh, light blue. Habitats with wild roses and a low fence are planned at the edge of the venue. A new bus stop at the turning circle of the Lankenauer Höft, including a shelter and new concrete seating walls, will also improve the connection.
The project receives support from the Woltmershauser advisory board, which very much welcomes the necessary improvement of the surrounding area. Another important concern is the year-round accessibility of the Lankenauer Höft by bus and ferry.
Historical background of the Weseruferpark
The Weseruferpark dates back to the 1970s, when it was created under the direction of the Hamburg architect Karl-Georg Lindenlaub. The village of Lankenau used to be located at this point, which was first mentioned in the 13th century, but was leveled as a result of the Wever deepening and the Neustädter Hafen. The design of the park, which took four years, created a wide meadow with play and seating elements as well as a long walking path that offers a beautiful view of the Weser and the harbor facilities.
In recent years, the first renovation measures have already been observed, such as the renewal of two seats near the Lankenauer Höft, one of which has a windbreak. These advances are part of the overarching goal of increasing the recreational value of the Weseruferpark and promoting habitats for local flora and fauna. In addition, the connection between the banks of the Weser will also be improved through a planned ferry connection.
The redesign of the Weseruferpark and the creation of new, attractive spaces are not only a benefit for leisure activities, but also for the entire neighborhood. At a time when nature and green spaces are becoming increasingly important, the usability and accessibility of such parks is a good investment in the quality of life of residents.
