Bremen shines: birth quality of the clinics at the highest level!

In Bremen there is reason to be happy! According to the new hospital mirror, which was presented today, the quality of obstetrics in the Hanseatic city is excellent. The health senator Claudia Bernhard (left) and the Bremen hospital company have published the current data, which show that almost 8,400 births were recorded in the clinics of the State of Bremen in 2024. Despite a slight decline in births compared to the previous year after the Corona Peak, the values are still very positive.

The Hospital Spiegel is an internet portal that is created in cooperation with an independent country quality office and the quality in a total of 17 treatment areas annually. It is particularly noteworthy that up to 40 percent of the births in Bremen come from mothers from the area of Lower Saxony. Five clinics are active in obstetrics: Bremen-Mitte, Bremen-Nord, Bremerhaven-Reinenheide, St. Joseph-Stift and Diako.

The caesarean section rates in view

A central topic in obstetrics are the caesarean sections. In Bremen, the proportion of caesarean sections is 32.7 percent, which ranks just below the national average of 33 percent. In public, there is sometimes skepticism about the increase in caesarean sections, especially with comparatively low complication risks. According to experts, the vaginal birth is the safest option for most pregnant women. Only about 10 percent of the Caesarean sections are desired caesarean sections, whereby the surgical intervention also carries risks for the mother.

The data in Bremer hospital mirror show that a low actual Caesarean section rate is a quality feature for the quality of treatment compared to the expected rate. Even if the actual rate can be high, this can still indicate good treatment.

Modern offers for expectant mothers

Another positive aspect is that a pediatrician was present in almost 98 percent of premature births, which ensures security. The clinics in Bremen continuously work on modernizing and adapting circle halls according to women's needs. These include special birth stools, seat balls, holding ropes and adjustable birth beds that increase comfort during birth.

A remarkable success is also the Bachelor's degree for midwives at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. Out of 20 graduates, 19 have found a job in Bremen clinics, which underlines the close connection between theory and practice in medicine.

The hospital mirror shows that obstetrics in Bremen are operated with a lot of commitment and a clear focus on safety and quality. It is to be hoped that many expectant parents in the Hanseatic city will continue to trust the excellent offers on site.
