Bremen plans great conversion: redesigning the center by 2030!
Bremen, Deutschland - On Tuesday, the Bremen Senate launched the new "Action Plan Center Bremen 2030+". This is a really important step for downtown Bremen, which sets the course for future -oriented urban development. The plan includes a variety of important private and public projects that are divided into three different periods - depending on the priority. Most of these projects run over several years and are intended to illustrate the spatial and temporal relationships between the different development locations.
Senator for Economic Affairs Kristina Vogt (left), however, had to stop the conversion of the cathedral courtyard because the financial means are currently missing. Nevertheless, the redesign remains on the agenda and is to be implemented by 2027. Other exciting projects are also planned during this period: the Balgequartier is enriched with the vinegar house, the city scale and the account house. In addition, the demolition of the Mitte car park is due and the Lower Rathaushalle is to be converted into a World Heritage Center.
long -term visions
not enough! By 2030, other large projects are on the list: the renovation of Karstadt, the construction of an auditorium for the legal faculty and the redesign of the Domsheide are pending. However, the latter could be at risk from possible complaints in their implementation. But the Bremeners cannot be discouraged and also plan the conversion of the Kaufhof property and the new building on the former parking garage center property. In the long term, the mayor-Smidt-Bridge is also to be rebuilt, and various climate roads are planned. With the action plan, the Senate clearly shows that it wants to revitalize the city center.
The Center 2030+ strategy has its origins in response to the existing challenges in the city center, which have been known since 2019. At that time, the Senate decided to deepen the existing inner city concept and to promote the development between Wall and Weser. Especially due to the effects of corona pandemic, the need for action is now all the greater. In a participatory process, ideas and strategies were developed together with urban society, inner city actors and project partners such as the Chamber of Commerce.
Focus and fields of action
The strategy names clear action requirements in the areas of use, public spaces and mobility. Several focus rooms have emerged from the workshops and citizen participations, including:
- am Brill
- Experience World Heritage Site
- Centrum on the Weser
- Mitte Bremen
- Wall systems
In the area on the Brill area, the former Sparkassen area is redesigned, for example, which should bring new uses and improved traffic areas for foot and cycle paths. The requirement to improve the quality of stay and open space is a central concern. The Bremen Senate has initiated gratifying through these ideas to make the city more attractive and lively.
makes this development difficult by the current challenges such as the decline in visitor numbers and the concerns about vacancies. Locations for department stores and traditional businesses are in danger, and the need for multicentre, diverse city structures requires innovative solutions and good cooperation between municipalities and citizens. In this context, the urban research projects, such as those initiated by the Difu and Fraunhofer ISI, have an important role. These are intended to help to better anticipate challenges and work out innovative concepts that aim to improve the quality of stay and create future -capable uses.
The next few years will promise to become interesting for the city center of Bremen - so that the plans not only stop on paper, but will soon bring the first visible changes!
