Discover the Baumweg jungle: Bremen's hidden natural paradise!

The nature around Bremen has a lot to offer, and... Jungle tree path in the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park is certainly one of them. Just a stone's throw from the city, located in the nature reserve between Emstek and Großenkneten, visitors can expect a unique natural experience on an area of around 61 hectares, of which 37 hectares are considered real virgin forest. There are majestic beech and oak trees here, some of which are several hundred years old and have taken on bizarre tree shapes, particularly due to the area's previous uses.

The jungle is not only a retreat for old trees, but also for many animal and plant inhabitants. Here you can find the rare emerit, the Juchten beetle, numerous cavity-nesting bird species as well as protected mushrooms such as the giant porling and the oak fire sponge. The condition of the forest is the result of a long history that dates back to the 13th century, when the area served as a hunting ground for the prince-bishops of Münster, who had rights to use wood and fatten pigs in the forest OpenPR reported.

History and nature preservation

Over the centuries, the forest area has been overused by goats, sheep and cattle, bringing natural regeneration to a halt. By removing heather sod and leaves that were used as bedding, the soil became increasingly poor in nutrients. It was not until 1873 that the Oldenburg state acquired all usage rights and thus laid the foundation for the recovery of the forest. With the declaration of a nature reserve in 1938, the change in the forest was promoted, so that any supportive interventions have been prohibited since then. From a historical perspective, the Baumweg jungle is a unique, ecological gem that was only shaped by human history.

Herwig Klemp, a passionate landscape photographer from Wardenburg, often visits this impressive area and has captured the magical atmosphere of the forest in his photographs. He presents some of these unique images on his website and plans to digitize his older photos as well. At a time when many landscapes are shaped by human influence, the Baumweg jungle shows how valuable and sensitive our nature is.

The importance of cultural landscapes

The Baumweg jungle is part of the diverse cultural landscapes of Lower Saxony. According to a publication about Nature conservation and landscape management in Lower Saxony, historical, cultural and natural conditions play an important role in identification with the landscape. These connections help to firmly anchor the feeling of home and illustrate how intertwined people and the environment are. The trees in the jungle are not only natural wonders, but also living witnesses to a rich history and sustainable development in the region.
