Baby swimming: Education about dangerous baby diving is urgently needed!

Today we're talking about a topic that concerns many parents in Bremen North: baby swimming and the associated risks. Maren Maetze, a committed representative of the Bremen-Nord early counseling center, reports on positive experiences from parents who take their little ones into the water. But there is also a less pleasant aspect - diving. Many people don't know that this can be very dangerous for babies.

Did you know that babies have more reflexes than adults - including the breathing reflex? This natural reflex protects them from drowning in the first months of life because it is controlled by the central nervous system. However, it is not permanent: this reflex can disappear in the first six months of life. Many parents are not aware of the dangers of baby diving, especially if the baby is submerged in the water without a reflex. Tragically, there have already been cases in the north of Bremen where infants had to be treated after diving accidents, which motivated the team of Maren Maetze and health professional Eda Kara-Rexhepi to launch an educational offensive.

Education about baby diving

Together with pediatricians and the health department, Maetze and Kara-Rexhepi are actively working to inform parents about the risks of baby diving. They distribute flyers and explain the differences between healthy baby swimming and dangerous diving. According to the experts, it is important for parents to consult their pediatrician before visiting the pool for the first time, especially if the baby is often sick.

Maetze also emphasizes that the swimming pool should be suitable for babies, i.e. warm water and adequate changing facilities. And while the DLRG has been warning about the risks of baby diving for a long time, much information about it on the Internet is rare.
