A remarkable success for 39-year-old Pawel Nowak, known as the “racing bike pastor” from Bremen. He performed impressively in the prestigious “Race Around Austria” cycling race, which is considered one of the toughest cycling races in Europe. With a total distance of 2,152 kilometers and an impressive 30,000 meters of altitude, he completed the race after 4 days, 19 hours and 41 minutes and reached the finish in Sankt Georgen am Attersee in third place. This was not only his first bike race, but also an opportunity to collect donations for the Bremen Children's Cancer Foundation.
Exactly ten days ago, Nowak was in the Vatican, where he had the honor of meeting Pope Leo XIV. During the general audience he brought letters from small patients from the “Löwenherz” children’s hospice in Syke. This resulted in a sum of over 7,000 euros, which he collected on his previous tour of 1,600 kilometers from Bremen to Rome in around 85 hours without sleep. Pope Leo XIV was impressed by Nowak's achievements and his dedication to the cause. cathedral radio reports that the Ultracycling World Championships 2025 started on Monday evening in Sankt Georgen.
An extreme race for a good cause
The “Race Around Austria” not only leads along picturesque landscapes, but also demands the rigors of Alpine challenges such as the Großglockner with its 2,450 meters altitude. Of the 13 riders who started in the men's singles, six gave up early, a clear indication of how extremely challenging the race is. Nowak, who competed for Germany, showed the ability and impressive endurance to fight his way to the podium while helping others.
However, his actions do not stop. The commitment shown by Nowak comes at a time when aid organizations such as the Children's Cancer Foundation urgently need support. This shows how sport and charity can go hand in hand - a message that resonates not only in Bremen, but far beyond. His next challenge won't be long in coming, as the racing bike pastor is already planning new projects.
