Increase in sexual violence against children in Bremen and Bremerhaven calls for preventative measures from the police and victim protection associations.

Increasing cases of sexual abuse: Bremen must act!
In Bremen, a worrying increase in cases of sexual abuse against children is causing alarm. The numbers have almost doubled since 2015. Bremerhaven is also recording an increase, as is the case police crime statistics shows. But what is the reason for these worrying developments? Police attribute the increased numbers to increased awareness among the population, which is contributing to more cases being reported.
The clearance rate for sexual offenses is currently almost 75 percent, which gives hope. Nevertheless, the challenge remains great. To counteract this, the police rely on prevention projects in schools. Also the victim protection association White ring is involved and distributes sensitizing children's books in daycare centers in Bremen North. These measures are intended to raise children's awareness of dangerous situations.
An important awareness raising
Experts such as child psychotherapist Lars White emphasize the importance of sensitizing children about sexual violence at an early stage. Younger children in particular are particularly vulnerable as they are often unable to protect themselves due to language barriers and dependence on trusted people. Perpetrators often come from the family environment, which is why it is essential to sensitize parents so that they can address dangers clearly and in a child-friendly manner.
The education must be child-friendly, emphasizes the Research Center for Sexuality Education. Parents should use concrete examples and appropriate media to address the topic. Excessive fear should be avoided and children should be encouraged to recognize their own physical limits and say “no”. It is important to recognize the signs of possible abuse, such as changed behavior or unusual sexualized language.
Offers of help for those affected
There are a number of contact and advice centers in Bremen that offer support for affected children. These include:
- Kinder- und Jugendschutztelefon: Tel.: 6 99 11 33
- Beratungsstelle Kinderschutz-Zentrum Bremen: Tel.: 0421 240 112 20, Mail: ksz@dksb-bremen.de
- Telefonseelsorge der Bremischen Evangelischen Kirche: Tel.: 0800 111 011 1 oder 0800 111 022 2
These offers are essential to give children security and to give them the opportunity to talk about their experiences. The WEISSE RING is not only committed to prevention, but also offers comprehensive advice and support for victims. The aim is to strengthen children and give them the right to maintain their own boundaries and say no. An important concern that affects both children and parents.
