Floods in Bremen: Ferry traffic set - what now?
In Bremen, the ferry operation between Vegesack and Lemwerder as well as between Farge and Berne has been quiet since Sunday, October 5, 2025. The reason for this measure is the flood that the region is currently on. The announcement was published by the Fährgesellschaft Bremen-Stedingen, and the setting of ferry traffic applies until further notice.
While the city is preparing for the effects of the flood, there are current storm flood warnings from the Federal Office for Sea shipping and hydrography (BSH) for Bremen and Bremerhaven. The storm surge on Sunday afternoon brought water levels of about 2.00 meters above the middle flood and leads to expected flood areas throughout Bremen.
Flood areas in Bremen
The concern should not be underestimated, especially in the following areas:
- Innenstadt: Schlachte, Herrlichkeit, Bereich „Tiefer“, Osterdeich Promenade/Uferweg, Café Sand: Rasenflächen
- Walle: Weserbahnhofpromenade, Promenadenweg Europahafen
- Obervieland: Wehrstraße
- Bremen Nord: Vegesacker Hafen, unterer Weg am Hafenbecken, Weserpromenadenweg Vegesack, Parkplatz Rönnebeck am Fähranleger Blumenthal, Parkplatz Fähranleger Farge
Such high water levels are also not an isolated case, as the BSH records show. In the current 2024/2025 season there were already three storm surges, while the previous season was able to come up with 13 storm surges. Some more extreme storm surges, such as those on November 23 and 24, 2023 in Bremen, reached values of 926 cm and 946 cm above the normal zero.
Preparations and protective measures
The city administration and the responsible bodies are working intensively to inform the population about the current dangers and prepare protective measures. It is to be hoped that the situation can be brought under control quickly so that ferry traffic can soon be normalized and the residents in the affected areas do not have to suffer.
