Bankruptcy wave: The fabric closes branches and starts clearance sales!
There is currently dark news in the German textile industry. The “Der Stoff” group of companies, which has 37 branches in Germany and employs almost 300 people, filed for bankruptcy on October 1, 2025. This is reported by the Westphalian General. The group consists of two companies: Der Stoff Stoffhandels GmbH and Hemkon GmbH. After some branches have already been closed, three further locations in Wiesbaden, Bremen-Vegesack and Naumburg will now be closed at the end of November and the end of December. The closures affect eleven employees who will lose their jobs.
According to the company, the reasons for the closures are ongoing losses in the affected branches. The Nordhorn district court has opened insolvency proceedings and the group is in the process of self-responsible restructuring. Eric Coordes, the responsible restructuring expert, is optimistic about the restructuring and suggests that the process could possibly be completed at the beginning of next year. An insolvency plan is also being developed that provides for the restructuring of both Hemkon and Der Stoff Stoffhandels GmbH. A shareholder structure remains unchanged while the contents of the plan are coordinated with the management.
Insight into the current situation of the textile industry
The insolvency of “Der Stoff” is not the only warning sign in the industry. According to statistics from the Federal Statistical Office Bankruptcies in the German textile and clothing industry have been increasing for years. The development from 2008 to 2024 shows that many companies in this sector of the economy have run into difficulties, which only increases the challenges for the industry.
The “Der Stoff” group of companies was founded 25 years ago and generated sales of 13 million euros in 2024. At the end of 2024, the company still operated 39 branches before the first closures took place in Hamburg and Dinslaken. “Der Stoff”’s online shop has also filed for bankruptcy, which further complicates the situation. There will also be a partial clearance sale in Wilhelmshaven, where significant discounts are also expected.
The Lower Saxony Consumer Center advises DefShop customers to take action so as not to lose their money, but uncertainty remains. The general consumer mood is suffering, and many consumers currently seem unwilling to spend their money on new textiles. These circumstances are reflected in the current developments and the ongoing insolvency reports in the industry, in which “Der Stoff” is not alone. The severity of the current situation makes it clear that the textile sector is in a critical phase.
