A1 complete closure between Billstedt and Norderelbe: diversions from September 19th!

Road users on the A1 motorway have to prepare for some important changes. From Friday, September 19, 2025, the A1 will be temporarily closed between the Hamburg-Billstedt junction (33) and the Norderelbe motorway triangle. This closure begins at 10:00 p.m. and lasts until 5:00 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2025. The reason for the full closure is urgent concrete renovation work on the Moorfleet tunnel, which is being carried out by Deutsche Bahn. Autobahn GmbH is also involved and is taking care of maintenance and upkeep work in the tunnel as well as repairing the asphalt surface layer.

But that's not all: In addition to the work in the tunnel, there is also renovation work on the Norderel Bridge. This bridge, which around 136,000 vehicles pass through every day, is now 40 years old and is now being renovated so that it can continue to be used safely in the future. Since the work began on September 2nd, only two of three lanes in the direction of Bremen have been accessible and the maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h. Traffic disruptions are expected until mid-September; However, the full closure brings with it further restrictions that will affect many drivers.

Detours and alternative routes

There are already fixed detours for those affected. In the north direction, drivers should take the A255 and B75 from the Norderelbe motorway triangle (36) to the HH-Billstedt junction (33). Users from the B75 “Wilhelmsburger Reichstraße” from the south to Lübeck can also use this diversion. There is a clear route in the south direction: From the HH-Billstedt junction (33) via the B5, B75 and A255 back to the A1. Demand diversions, such as the U85 and U26, are also offered.

For those traveling from the A25 to Bremen or Lübeck, an exit at AS HH-Allermöhe (2) is necessary, followed by a route via Hans-Duncker-Straße, Rungedamm and Amandus Stubbe Straße to the B5. If you want to drive from Bremen and Hanover towards the Baltic Sea, it is best to use the large bypasses on the A7, B205, A21 and A20. There are also clear instructions that you should take into account for the return journey from the Baltic Sea.

Weather-dependent work and current traffic conditions

There is an important note: the work is weather-dependent, which means that there may be short-term postponements. This means that you should remain flexible when planning your trips. Current information on traffic flow and disruptions is available via ADAC Maps, where real-time data on necessary route changes and any dangers along the route can be provided.

Road users are advised to find out about the best routes in good time and to drive particularly carefully during construction work. Detailed information can also be found on the Autobahn GmbH websites: ahrensburg-portal.de and NDR.
