Parcel center Bremen-Hemelingen is celebrating 20 years and is facing challenges!

Bremen is known for its lively economy and dynamic logistics scene. Particular attention is paid to the parcel center in Hemelingen, which opened its doors exactly 20 years ago, in August 2005, and has played a central role in parcel logistics ever since. The head of the center, Bernd Littwin, is not only celebrating this milestone birthday, but is also retiring on October 1st. At 65 years old after 50 years of service at Deutsche Post, this is a real career end that many can look back on.

When Littwin began his career at the post office, online platforms such as Amazon and eBay were still a long way away. At that time, the German Federal Post Office was a state-owned company, and the postal clerk became a civil servant after two and a half years of training. Today the landscape has changed completely: The Bremen-Hemelingen parcel center serves the postal codes 27 and 28, which covers around 900,000 households.

Increasing demands on logistics

Around 240,000 packages are currently processed in Hemelingen every day. In view of the constantly growing demand, a modernization of the sorting system is underway. This can currently sort up to 20,000 packages per hour, which is a real asset for the challenges ahead. The parcel volume already exceeds the volumes during the Corona period and is expected to continue to grow by around 5% per year. In order to keep up with this dynamic, Littwin is expected to integrate six new terminal positions before his retirement.

However, there were also challenges. Just recently, on Tuesday, a technical breakdown caused the sorting system in the parcel center to come to a standstill. “Thousands of packages were left stranded during the outage,” reads a report from Buten un Binnen. To ensure service quality, shipments were redirected to other centers, but this resulted in delays in package delivery.

In the logistics industry as a whole, the DHL Group is very popular as a leading company in 2023 with sales of around 81.8 billion euros. With the e-commerce boom, logistics has established itself as the second most important economic sector in Germany. According to Statista, a total of around 4.6 billion tons of goods were transported in Germany in 2022, with the majority being transported by road. The most dynamic regions in logistics are primarily the Ruhr area and Frankfurt.

As far as the next steps for the Bremen-Hemelingen parcel center and the entire industry are concerned, developments remain exciting. The challenges are great, but with a good hand and the right decisions, the parcel center could continue to be a pioneer in efficient logistics. Bernd Littwin leaves his work at a time when both increased demand and technological adjustments are crucial. The future of parcel shipping is already in full swing.
