Zetterer remains number 1 at Werder: goalkeeper decision is made!

It's going to be exciting at Werder Bremen! The goalkeeper question has repeatedly come to the fore in recent weeks. Coach Horst Steffen has now made the decision that Michael Zetterer will continue to be on the pitch as the starting goalkeeper. The 30-year-old clearly prevailed against his younger competitor Mio Backhaus in preparation. Zetterer will remain number 1 in the team for the time being, unless there is a change in the meantime buten and within reported.

Speaking of a move: Zetterer was recently in talks with West Ham United. There was an official offer for the keeper. But the English ultimately decided to sign another goalkeeper. It looks like Zetterer will stay on the Weser. This is important in the current phase in which the team is fighting for experienced pillars. Especially after Marvin Ducksch moved to Birmingham City, Bremen lacks experienced leadership in attack.

The challenge for Backhaus

Mio Backhaus, who is only 21 years old and is considered a promising talent, is under pressure. He needs match practice in order to be able to develop further. However, Backhaus' position could change over the course of the season, especially if Zetterer does not show the form he needs to stabilize the team. The personnel unrest in the squad - for example the absence of Mitchell Weiser and Olivier Deman in the wingback positions - brings additional challenges. In addition, Danish attacker Jens Stage is expected to be out due to injury until at least September OneFootball supplemented.

This situation certainly has some impact on Werder Bremen's squad planning as they prepare for their upcoming round of competition. There are currently 29 players available, but the team has been hit hard by injuries. In addition, Bremen have only scored one goal in their last five test matches and are therefore under pressure.

Future outlook

The coming season will be anything but easy for Werder Bremen. As an experienced keeper, Zetterer brings important stability to the defense, which is invaluable in this situation. But the question remains: How will the goalkeeping question develop over the course of the season? If Zetterer continues his form, he could be the key to success. At the same time, Backhaus has to stick with it and work on his chances in order not to be completely left behind in the race for the place between the posts.
