Senior woman robbed in drugstore: police arrest perpetrator in the act!

On August 12, 2025, the police responded to a remarkable incident in the Vahr district of Bremen. Two suspected thieves, aged 22 and 31, were arrested after stealing an 82-year-old senior woman's valuables from a drugstore. The 22-year-old suspect distracted the elderly woman while his accomplice stole a wallet and a smartphone from her handbag. An attentive store detective was able to observe the two perpetrators, follow them and alert the police. The suspects were arrested quickly and the loot was returned to the elderly woman.

The two men, Algerian nationals, have had several previous run-ins with the law for similar property crimes. The younger of the two was released after the police measures were completed, while the public prosecutor's office ordered the measures to continue for the 31-year-old suspect. It is still unclear whether an arrest warrant will be issued, as there is a risk of absconding and recidivism.[ News Today ] reports the details.

Trick theft on Kurt-Schumacher-Allee

Another similar incident occurred on Kurt-Schumacher-Allee, where an 87-year-old woman was the victim of a trick theft. The perpetrator posed as a doctor's assistant and wore a white coat in order to get into the senior citizen's apartment. The pretext was the alleged investigation of water damage in the doctor's office below. While the elderly woman was distracted, the perpetrator managed to steal cash worth 100 euros and a cell phone worth over 900 euros.

The senior citizen became suspicious when she later asked the practice and learned that there was no water damage. This shows once again how important it is to be careful in such cases. The Bremen police are warning older people not to let strangers into their homes and are calling for help in identifying the perpetrator. Increase in crimes among seniors

These incidents shed light on a growing problem: more and more older people are making headlines as perpetrators. Around 10% of the suspects are now over 60 years old. Demographic change means that the number of pensioners in our society is increasing, and studies show that petty crimes in particular, such as theft and fraud, are increasing. Professor Stefan Pohlmann from the University of Munich has studied age-related crime intensively and explains: “Serious crimes are rare among seniors – the most common crimes are minor crimes.”[ Evening newspaper Munich ]

The motives for such acts are varied: boredom, the desire for variety or even impulse control problems could play a role. Many seniors feel safer when they shoplift because they are often perceived as trustworthy. This raises serious questions about understanding and addressing age-related crime. Proposals for alternative punishments, such as community service or community service, are becoming increasingly important in order to promote the integration of these people and give them a chance at a life free from punishment.
