200 years Sparkasse Bremen: Anniversary exhibition inspires visitors!
Huchting, Deutschland - The Sparkasse Bremen has reason to be happy: it celebrates its 200th anniversary! On July 17, 2025, an anniversary exhibition opened in historical Haus am Markt . Under the motto "200 Years of Sparkasse Bremen - #possible since 1825", the close connection between the Sparkasse and the Hanseatic city of Bremen is presented impressively. Visitors: Inside, you can look forward to a diverse offer that saves the topics of saving, urban development, retirement provision, living space funding and much more.
A special highlight of the exhibition is the insight into the corporate archive, which has been built since 2015. It shows original documents, photographs and exhibits that illustrate the history of Sparkasse Bremen since its foundation on June 23, 1825 by the then mayor Simon Hermann Nuns. The first branch opened shortly afterwards on July 11, 1825, and the first saver was the astronomer Wilhelm Olbers. In the first few hours, 2,027 thaler and 7 grote have already been paid into a total of 52 savings books, which took the great demand for savings options in Bremen.

The origins of the Sparkasse Bremen go back to 1817 when the Discontocasse was founded. The idea of a Sparkasse took shape when the Senate initially developed an inclusive proposal in 1821, but was delayed by disputes. With 96 founding members, including several mayors and senators, the Sparkasse started its long career in Bremen.
As early as 1830, 4,000 citizens had a credit of a total of 330,000 valley. The Sparkasse grew steadily in the following years. In 1840, the savings on 1 million thalers and 13,000 customers were, and in 1900 there were already seven extensions. These numbers show how much the trust of the population in the Sparkasse had grown and how important it became for the city of Bremen.
The exhibition and its opening times
The anniversary exhibition also offers an overview of the history of German currency history, from Bremen Taler and the introduction of the euro. The exhibition is unfortunately not barrier -free, but the content is also available online if someone cannot stop by.
