New emergency center in Bremen: How to protect offshore wind farms!
Safety at sea is very important in Bremen: On August 29, 2025, a special emergency control center was set up that is responsible for offshore emergencies. This important facility aims to provide rapid assistance in the event of medical emergencies on offshore facilities. Around 400,000 households in the hinterland could be left without power in the event of a total failure of the offshore wind farm off Borkum, which underlines the urgency of rational emergency measures. NWZonline reports that…
The new emergency control center, which has found its place in Bremen, is manned by the experienced rescue workers from Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe. These professionals are very familiar with offshore facilities and coordinate emergency medical care in the event of accidents or acute illnesses in German waters, including the exclusive economic zone. The dispatchers act as the first point of contact for first aiders and operations managers on site and give competent first aid instructions. Johanniter Offshore provides information about this...
Professional emergency management
The operation and construction sites of offshore wind turbines place high demands on emergency management. That's why the Society for Maritime Emergency Management (GMN) was founded. This organization is designed to provide expertise and technical facilities for emergencies on offshore installations. It is financed by the operators of the offshore facilities and is independent of donations. GMN describes...
In order to be able to respond adequately to unforeseen incidents, a comprehensive exercise with around 100 rescue workers recently took place. This exercise was designed to prepare for the challenges that can arise during medical emergencies on offshore installations. Challenges that should not be underestimated: The often long distances to hospitals and the unpredictable wind and weather conditions make quick help essential.
A particularly pleasing aspect of the new emergency control center is the close cooperation with other emergency control centers, including the See rescue control center in Bremen. Medical and nautical aspects are incorporated into operational planning to ensure a consistent flow of information. This is particularly important because none of the calls for medical help in the North and Baltic Seas should remain unanswered. The control center uses innovative technologies such as telemedicine and a special app to optimize the overview of available rescue helicopters.
If we think about the role of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS), it quickly becomes clear that the offshore wind farm emergency control center is an indispensable addition to the maritime search and rescue service. While the DGzRS is responsible for maritime emergencies between the mainland and the offshore facilities, the GMN fills the gap that exists in emergency situations on the offshore facilities. These interconnected services create a safety net that extends well beyond the boundaries of maritime threats.
