92-year-old outwits fraudster: Police catch perpetrators in Bremen!
A remarkable incident recently occurred in Bremen-Woltmershausen that shows how important mistrust and quick reactions are in the face of attempted fraud. A 92-year-old senior citizen was the victim of a shocking call in which a fraudster posed as her daughter. She claimed to have caused a serious accident and demanded a large sum of cash as bail. But the woman from Bremen acted cleverly and was not deceived.
On September 24, 2025, the elderly lady received the call in which the fake daughter pretended to urgently need money for bail. Instead of immediately responding to the demands, the senior stayed on the phone and pretended to follow instructions while simultaneously contacting her real daughter, who lives in the same apartment building. They reacted immediately and informed the police. So it happened that the two fraudsters, two 30-year-old Ukrainians, appeared at the apartment door that same evening to collect the money, but were already expected by the officials and were arrested. The public prosecutor ordered the two to be taken into custody.
Clarification by the police
The Bremen police praised the exemplary behavior of the senior citizen and her daughter. A press release emphasizes the importance of involving relatives in such situations and informing the police. In such cases, being suspicious of unusual calls could also help others avoid falling for scammers. The phenomenon of shock calls is primarily aimed at older people, who can often become unsettled very easily. The fraudsters put the victims under time pressure with their stories in order to force quick decisions and get the money handed over.
Police warn that such callers often pretend to be relatives or bosses in order to frighten their victims and get them to hand over money or valuables. In some cases, combinations of fraud variants are also used, such as the well-known grandchild trick, followed by a call from an alleged police officer. The current situation in Bremen is not an isolated case, as various fraud variants have shown in recent weeks.
Prevention measures
To protect yourself from such attempted fraud, the police advise:
It is crucial to take such scams seriously and remain vigilant. By educating and providing information about the fraudsters' methods, we can work together to protect older people and ourselves.
