Activists block meat factory and port – protest against animal husbandry!

Activists are sending a strong message against industrial animal husbandry and feed imports: They took action in Delmenhorst and Bremen on Friday and blocked the entrances to two important companies. The demonstrations, organized by the “Disrupt Now” alliance, attracted numerous supporters and caused excitement in the region.

In Delmenhorst, around 70 people gathered in front of the Könecke meat factory. Some activists chained themselves to gates or stuck themselves to the asphalt. The police were on site and asked those blocking the gate to release a gate. 15 of them ignored this request and ultimately had to be taken to the police station, while the others dissolved their blockade operations independently after the evacuation. Police confirmed the driveway was cleared in the afternoon. These actions are linked to a broader protest movement against the practice of importing animal feed, particularly from Latin and South America. NDR reports that such imports are primarily used for pig fattening in the region.

Blockade in Bremen

Similar picture in Bremen: Around 100 climate and environmental activists blocked the access of a port service provider in Walle. The company specializes in the handling of agricultural goods, but the demonstrators demanded a stop to animal feed imports. Here too, the police issued requests to remove the mask, but these were ignored. This circumstance led to some activists being taken to the police to establish their personal details. Ultimately, some trucks were prevented from leaving the site and posters with slogans such as “Stop feed imports” showed the central message of the protest. Weser-Kurier reports that the police have initiated investigations into suspected coercion and violations of the Assembly Act.

The background of the protest

The “Disrupt Now” alliance campaigns for better agriculture and nutrition and criticizes the negative effects of industrial animal husbandry. The protests are part of a larger commitment that goes beyond the blockades: a camp has been set up in Bremen and a demonstration in front of the main train station has been announced for next Saturday.

In addition, the nature conservation association BUND is taking part in the protests with a harbor tour in Brake, thereby showing its criticism of the planned deepening of the Lower Weser for the harbor. The demand for locally produced feed for the animals is also a top priority and is intended to reduce dependence on feed imports.

These impressive actions make it clear that the issue of industrial animal husbandry and feed imports is not only important locally, but also globally. The activists want to use their efforts to attract attention and bring about change - in the spirit of sustainable agriculture.
