Bremen under traffic jam alarm: Weser Bridge restricted until 2027!

Traffic jams and detours, the new normal on the A1: The extensive construction work on the Weser Bridge near Bremen has already put the patience of many commuters to the test. The renovation of the road in the direction of Hamburg begins on Monday morning, an undertaking that is expected to last until 2027. During the construction period, traffic will be directed to two lanes towards the north and two towards Osnabrück, which gave no reason to ease last weekend after lengthy waiting times and kilometers of traffic jams. The passage in the direction of Osnabrück was reduced to a single lane from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, which significantly burdened traffic, as butenunbinnen.de reports.

But what is actually behind this work? During a routine inspection of the bridge, bearing damage was discovered, requiring urgent repairs. In order to restore the functionality of the bridge, DEGES has started installing buckling stiffeners. These stabilize beams that are at risk of buckling and ensure the load-bearing capacity of the bridge, especially inside the middle hollow girder. In addition, new corrosion protection has been applied in the past few days and the blasting work in the inner hollow edge construction has been completed, as DEGES explains.

Construction work and traffic restrictions

The work mentioned, which will take several years, will be accompanied by temporary traffic restrictions. Further repair work is already planned for two weekends in February, which will only provide a lane for vehicles traveling in the direction of Osnabrück at night from 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. The same applies to the night of February 22nd to 23rd in the direction of Hamburg. This circumstance raises the question of how commuters and travelers can deal with it.

It is also interesting to know that Germany has an extensive transport infrastructure with around 40,300 bridges. Still, many of these flyovers, most of which were built between 1960 and 1985, face enormous challenges. The increase in heavy traffic and the age structure require an extensive bridge modernization program. The aim of this program is to adapt the existing infrastructure to today's requirements in terms of load capacity and traffic safety, as can be read on the website of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

Until the renovation of the Weser Bridge is completed, road users will have to prepare for longer travel times and possible diversions. It remains to be hoped that the work will progress quickly and the bridge will soon be fully passable again.
