Brutal attack in Bremen: Homophobic group attacks couple!

On August 30, 2025, a 27-year-old from Bremen was the victim of a shocking attack that once again brought the worrying situation of queer people in Germany into the spotlight. The incident occurred in downtown Bremen, in front of a supermarket on Obernstrasse. Five men chased, insulted and ultimately physically attacked the couple, as Bild reports. The 27-year-old was insulted with the derogatory term “faggot” and then physically attacked. Two perpetrators kicked his leg and punched him in the face, demonstrating the violent escalation of this homophobic act.

The description of the attackers suggests that they were young: the two main attackers were between 17 and 20 years old, around 180 cm tall and wore conspicuous clothing. A search was launched immediately, but the investigation has so far been unsuccessful. The Bremen police are urgently asking for information by calling 0421 362-3888.

Increasing hatred and violence

The incident in Bremen fits seamlessly into a worrying trend. Anti-queer crimes have been increasing in Germany for years. According to current police statistics, a total of 1,785 crimes against homosexuals and other queer people were recorded in 2023, an increase of over 50 percent compared to the previous year (1,188 crimes). This increase is not just a number; it reflects the growing intolerance and violence that queer people experience every day.

Particularly alarming are the 212 victims of violent crimes in 2023, compared to 197 in 2022. There is also a dramatic development here: the number of crimes in the area of “sexual orientation” and “gender diversity” has increased almost tenfold since 2010. The report by the Federal Criminal Police Office highlights that many crimes are not reported due to fear of further discrimination or the feeling that the crimes are not taken seriously. A dark field study shows that 96% of queer people do not report hate speech and 87% do not report physical assault.

Political reactions

In view of the alarming increase in homophobic attacks, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is calling for consistent prosecution of anti-queer violence. In September 2022, a working group to combat homophobic and transphobic violence was created, which presented recommendations for improving the security situation for queer people. A record of crime-related security is also required in order to take targeted action against this form of violence, as Tagesschau reports.

The recent incidents once again underline the urgency of strengthening the protection and rights of LGBTIQ* people. Only through visibility, education and strong social commitment can we curb this form of violence and enable a safe life for everyone. The police and society are called upon to take a stand together against hatred and discrimination.
