Bremen-Nord in a film frenzy: 915 visitors celebrate Lux Freilicht”!
The “Lux Freilicht” season in Bremen-Nord ended this year with a resounding success. In total, extraordinary films were presented on eight evenings and at seven different locations. The positive result: 915 visitors found their way to the events, which represents a significant increase compared to the 700 guests last year. Jörn Hein from the Chamber of Employees was positive about the great response and emphasized that around two thirds of the guests came from the north of Bremen, while 17 percent came from the city itself and 11 percent from the surrounding area. The event aims to strengthen the identity of the north of Bremen and put lesser-known places in the spotlight, which it clearly succeeded in doing.
A particularly outstanding highlight was the screening of the Oscar-winning animated film “Flow”. This impressively showed animals fighting a catastrophic natural event and attracted numerous new visitors to the ecology station. The screening of the film “I am the river, the river is me” at the Lesumhafen was particularly well attended, with 180 spectators recording the largest number of participants. Due to the rain sequences in the film, most of the guests remained loyal even when it actually rained. The organizers Krol and Hein received active support from the municipal cinema City 46.
Sustainability and environmental awareness
As part of the “Lux Freilicht” series, the program not only included entertaining films, but also relevant topics that made you think. The documentary “Where the Rivers Disappear” addressed the pressing issue of water scarcity and highlights the increasing challenges posed by water consumption in agriculture, which takes up 70% of fresh water. The filmmakers Manuel Daubenberger and Felix Meschede used impressive images to show how the overuse of rivers like the Ebro and Colorado is directly linked to excessive meat consumption. The responsibility of agricultural corporations, which make immense profits through their water consumption, was also pointed out.
Another aspect of the film addressed water pollution from the textile industry, which accounts for 20% of global contamination. A dialogue with the authors after the performance was intended to discuss solutions and convey ideas. Freedom of entry allowed many to engage with these pressing issues.
Continuation in prospect
“Lux Freilicht” experienced noticeable popularity this year and there is great interest in a sequel in 2026. However, the organizers are dependent on securing the necessary budget item to ensure the events can take place. In addition, the concept of connecting films with their screening locations was rated as extremely successful in the culturally disadvantaged districts of Bremen-Nord in the three years of its existence. The diverse selection of performance locations, such as the natural meadow of the Tura canoeing department, the garden of the Kränholm Art and Culture Foundation and Wätjen Park, promotes community networking and the shared experience of art and nature.
The event has established itself as both a cultural highlight and a platform to bring important social issues into the spotlight. We can only hope that this beautiful tradition will be continued and that the next generations can also discover the beauty and challenges of nature.
As the Weser-Kurier reports, the positive feedback is no coincidence. The organizers' vision is further promoted through cooperation with the Employees' Chamber of Bremen and other local partners. The taz is also enthusiastic about the combination of social responsibility and artistic expression that characterizes the series.
