Insolvency shock: Stoff closes several branches in Germany!
Things are anything but easy for the fabric retail chain “Der Stoff” at the moment. As Ruhr24 reports, the company has been in self-administration insolvency proceedings since October 1, 2025. This was already applied for at the Nordhorn District Court at the end of July 2025. There are also plans to close some branches: the locations in Wiesbaden and Bremen-Vegesack must close by the end of November, while the branch in Naumburg will not close until the end of December. In total, eleven employees will lose their jobs, causing concern in the local community.
The extent of the difficulties is also evident at another branch in Wilhelmshaven, which has been closed since mid-October due to a lack of staff. Before the insolvency proceedings, the company closed two branches in Hamburg (Hallerstrasse) and Dinslaken. Of the original 39 branches, only 33 remain. The 19 locations in North Rhine-Westphalia appear to be spared from closures for the time being, and the branch in Essen celebrated a reopening on October 13, 2025 after moving to the Kronenberg Center. A ray of hope in the midst of turbulence.
Remediation measures
In order to improve the situation, restructuring expert Eric Coordes has already offered his help and is working closely with management to restructure the company. Coordes expressed optimism and emphasized that the renovation was going “well overall”. It is hoped that the insolvency proceedings could be completed in early 2026. As long as this is not the case, sales, including online orders via the subsidiary stoffolino, remain possible.
In crisis situations, having the right tools is crucial. As the article by PwC shows, companies can often still be saved through tailor-made crisis management solutions. Early detection of crisis signals, such as the loss of important customers or dependence on short-term financing, are just as important as a well-structured early crisis detection system. The latter helps to identify relevant risks in a timely manner.
Support from experts
The challenge of financial hardship is not just limited to The Material. Many companies face similar difficulties. For example, Kreston Global offers support in restructuring and insolvency resolution. The consultants have years of experience and can help ensure the stability and long-term success of a company. Their services are intended to support not only companies but also lenders in difficult financial situations.
It remains to be seen whether “Der Stoff” can still turn things around. At the moment the cards are on the table, and the next few weeks are crucial for the future of the company and its employees. Let's hope for a positive end to this story!
