Matjesfest in Vegesack: Celebrate tradition and enjoyment on June 21!

A very special event is just around the corner: On Saturday, June 21, 2025, the Matjestag is celebrated in Vegesack, a festival that revives the local tradition of herring. The event at Utkiek is organized by Vegesack Marketing and the Vegesacker Junge Förderkreis and promises a colorful program for all fish lovers and artists.

The highlight of the festival will be the symbolic arrival of the first Matjes barrel of the season, which is brought to the signal station by barge called "Vegebüddel". This maritime tradition is accompanied by a cutter puller from the district before the barrel is solemnly carried to the Utkiek. Ulrich Möllmann, who will be moderated by the show program, is also included.

Culinary and cultural for everyone

The offer leaves nothing to be desired: In addition to matjes dishes, there will be cold drinks and a varied cultural program. The “Matjesdiploms” provides entertainment from live music to port tours to the ceremonial awarding of the "Matjesdiploma". The creative matjes dishes of local restaurateurs are also a highlight, including Matjesburger and Sherry-Matjes in the bun that promise a taste of the world of matjes variations.

A special focus is on the first Vegesacker Matjeswochen, which will take place until July 6, 2025. These should not only promote the enjoyment of Matjes, but also offer a cultural supporting program. Costumed companions in the Vegesack stories house will spend coffee and cake and thus contribute to the festive atmosphere.

Community campaign and commitment

The community is also actively involved: participants can win vouchers for local catering businesses in the competition "Vegesacker Matjespass", the main prize is 100 euros. The Advisory Board Vegesack has already approved 2000 euros from global funds to support this traditional action. Mike Ramsey, Chairman of the Vegesacker Junge Förderkreis, emphasizes the importance of joint commitment to make the Matjes weeks a full success, and promises a lively exchange between the gastronomy and the visitors.

E -events take place in the neighborhood, such as the Emder Matjestage, which were celebrated from May 29 to June 1, 2025. With over 450 years of tradition, this event is reminiscent of herring fishing, which was shifted to Bremerhaven in 1969. There were also numerous attractions and exciting offers for visitors, such as live bands and in the permanently interwoven old traditions.
