Borgfeld woman in action: How to successfully integrate refugees!

It's not an easy start - that's what often characterizes the journey of people who come to Germany. In Bremen, especially in the Borgfeld district, this challenge is particularly committed to the initiative of a woman from Borgfeld. Her work with refugees from different countries, even Ukraine, brings to light complex needs. In an impressive report, she tells us what life is like for these people and what support they need. Weser-Kurier reports.

With a very clear focus, the woman from Borgfeld puts the everyday lives of refugees at the center of her work. Many of them are not only confronted with the language barrier, but are also struggling with the consequences of the corona pandemic. In 2024, projects that help this target group are to be funded with 10.3 million euros. This means that those affected have an important perspective in order to gain a foothold in their new home. The integration officer emphasizes that the aim is to make people active members of society.

Diverse funding opportunities

But it's not just individual support that is relevant. On a broader level, numerous programs are being launched to integrate and support refugees. Among other things, the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) pools European funds that can be applied for through the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). These funds flow into projects that strengthen the Common European Asylum System and integrate third-country nationals. You can find out more about this on the website Federal Agency for Civic Education.

Another example are projects for refugee children and their families. The special fund “Help for refugee children and their families” aims to offer psychological support and educational opportunities to these particularly vulnerable groups. The numbers speak for themselves: around 9.6 million euros will be made available in 2024 to combat racism in order to promote equal opportunities and counteract discrimination.

Commitment and volunteerism

A key to successful integration are the volunteers, who often fight tirelessly for the needs of refugees. Support for these volunteers is essential. The integration officer offers qualification measures to ensure that the volunteers are best prepared for their tasks. Particular attention is paid to the needs of vulnerable groups such as refugee women, children and young people.

The activities and projects that are supported by appropriate funding in Bremen and beyond show the diverse ways in which integration can be successful. From sports courses to workshops on the German working world to further training in social skills – the diversity is remarkable. The woman from Borgfeld and her team are an important part of the bigger picture and help to build bridges.
