Ten years of successful integration: Borgfeld celebrates its refugees!
On October 11, 2025, numerous guests in Borgfeld celebrated a special anniversary: ten years have passed since the first 80 refugees arrived in the region. Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte highlighted the success story of the commitment in Borgfeld at the reunion. Ten years ago, initially 50 and later 80 unaccompanied minor refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Guinea, Eritrea, Albania and Morocco were accommodated in the Am Borgfelder Saatland sports hall. This celebration is not only a look back, but also proof of the importance of integrating refugees into our society.
Numerous volunteers were on site, including the former refugees who now work in various professions such as car manufacturers, paramedics, construction mechanics and geriatric nurses. These people have played a key role from the beginning by organizing German courses, sports activities, short internships and an international café. The integration of these young people was significantly supported by the commitment of up to 30 volunteers who work tirelessly to break down language and social barriers.
Language support as a key to integration
What actually plays the biggest role in integration? That’s right – the German language! It is the key to gaining a foothold in Germany. Language skills are crucial for access to education and the labor market as well as for social participation. Studies clearly show that there is a connection between educational success and language skills. Children and young people from immigrant families often have difficulties in school, which - unsurprisingly - affects their chances in life. Therefore, promoting the German language is a central aspect of integration policy.
German courses and orientation courses, which are often offered free of charge, are crucial. Here, refugees not only learn the language, but also receive information about the German legal system, culture and social values. Providers such as adult education centers and private language schools play an important role here. In addition, the Federal Employment Agency and social institutions provide support by providing internships and training positions, which further facilitates integration.
Educational opportunities for all generations
Another important point is access to education for children and young people with a migrant background. Regular schools not only offer a platform for language learning, but also promote social integration. Language support is also emphasized in early childhood education. This ensures that children receive the support they need to be successful, both in daycare and later at school.
The challenges are great, but the successes in Borgfeld are a shining example of what shared commitment can achieve. It shows that successful integration must be a holistic approach that requires collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, businesses and civil society. We must not forget that integration is a task that concerns everyone - because in the end we all benefit from a diverse society.
