Price shock for Bremen tram: 87.7 million euros for 1.3 km!
Bremen's infrastructure has experienced a new price jump. The estimated costs for the 1.3 kilometer long tram link from Hastedt to the Vahr rose by a whopping 23.5 million euros to now 87.7 million euros. As the District newspaper reported, a budget of 42 million euros was originally planned when building rights were obtained in 2021. However, the situation has worsened considerably due to a general increase in prices in the construction sector and a lack of competition.
The new planning approval decision was published on December 1, 2020, after the first procedure on July 23, 2015 stalled due to resistance and protests. When construction work began in June 2025, the track triangle at the Bennigsenstrasse/Bei den Drei Pfählen intersection was also tackled.
Traffic calming and diversions
The Bennigsenstrasse junction is currently completely closed, but trams should at least be running again from Monday, August 18th. However, private traffic remains affected, diversions lead via Stresemannstrasse, Malerstrasse and Hastedter Osterdeich.
The new construction work is part of the “Line 2 Connects” project, which is intended to create a direct tram connection between the garden city of Vahr, Hastedt and the eastern suburbs. One of the longest tram lines in Bremen will be created with a total of 20 kilometers and 44 stops. This connection enables passengers to get from Gröpelingen via the city center to Neue Vahr Süd without having to change trains - even to Tenever during peak times.
A comprehensive project
The start of the project was celebrated with a ceremony on May 27, 2025, in the presence of Özlem Ünsal, Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development, and other representatives of Bremer Straßenbahn AG. Various construction phases are planned, with the first being in the award process and the second being finalized. The entire route is targeted for completion by 2028.
The construction work is not just limited to the tram. The Mayor Smidt Bridge will also be completely closed until the end of February 2025, while the Wilhelm Kaisen and St. Pauli Bridges will be renovated from August 2025. All of these measures are part of a comprehensive transport development plan that offers future-oriented solutions for Bremen's transport infrastructure. It is hoped that these projects can save 2.1 million car kilometers annually and thus reduce around 900 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
With these developments, Bremen shows that it has a good knack for sustainably improving mobility in the city - despite the challenges caused by cost increases and construction sites throughout the city. The Bremen construction confirms that the coordination of this important infrastructure measure by the Hanseatic city is now in full swing.
Finally, it should be mentioned that the future construction projects, such as the... Buten and inland reported, should be coordinated with consideration for existing construction sites in order not to put additional strain on the traffic flow in Bremen. Bremen has a clear course of significantly modernizing the city in the coming years and strengthening the public transport infrastructure.
