Fear in Bremen: Hemelingerin talks about her experiences and worries

In recent months, the Bremen population's sense of security has fluctuated greatly. Especially in Hemelingen, the issue of security and the fears associated with it are becoming more and more present. Karla Hense-Brosig, a 68-year-old from the district, shares her experiences with bullying and provocations in public. Despite her worries, she says she often goes out on the streets in the evenings with confidence.

“I don’t let fear guide me,” says Hense-Brosig. She is unwilling to let negative experiences, such as the smells and strange behavior of other passengers on buses, get her down. Your approach? “I’ll bully back.” This may seem unwise to some, but she feels that more action is needed from the police when it comes to minor transgressions. “The police were stricter when I was a child,” she says, suggesting that a law enforcement presence could make more of a difference.

The focus is on the feeling of security

A current online survey by WESER-KURIER showed that over 25 percent of Bremen participants feel unsafe. These results speak for themselves: many citizens, especially from the queer community, avoid certain parts of the city, while the survey shows a bleak picture of the feeling of safety in the city. This is also reflected in the 2025 security survey, which was commissioned by the Bremen police. According to the Bremen police A comprehensive survey of the crime situation is carried out every three years in order to shed light on dark areas and optimize police work.

The safety survey takes place in a variety of forms to ensure high participation. Around 30,000 people aged 16 and over are being contacted. It is important that the response to this survey is representative in order to be able to make valid statements about security in the state of Bremen.

Current results and challenges

Previously, in 2022, almost 29,000 people were interviewed in a similar survey in Bremen and Bremerhaven. It turned out that the vast majority are satisfied with their living environment - seven out of ten people confirmed a high level of social cohesion in their neighborhoods. But despite these positive aspects, 96 percent of those surveyed felt safe during the day. At night this value dropped to 76 percent, and many reported unsafe places, especially in Bremerhaven.

Trust in the police remains high. According to the Bremerhaven Police Eight out of ten respondents rated the actions of the police as professional and citizen-friendly. Nevertheless, there is a desire for more information on the crime situation and for a greater presence of pedestrian and bicycle patrols.

The feedback from the surveys clearly shows that the population not only wants strong protection, but also active measures to improve their security. Despite the improved police work, many people in Bremen would like to see a noticeable change in how small violations are dealt with in order to promote a feeling of security and address challenges.
