Big cycling demonstration in Bremen: For safe cycle paths and climate protection!
The anticipation for the upcoming bike tour of the North Bremen district group of the ADFC is increasing! On Sunday, September 7th, it’s time for all cycling enthusiasts to “saddle up their bikes and get going”. The starting shot will be fired at 9 a.m. at the Netto discounter on Burger Brücke, Lesumbroker Landstrasse. The goal is Bremen's largest bicycle demonstration, which starts at 11 a.m. at Tiefer / Altenwall in the city center. The BLV reports that the tour will be led by the experienced ADFC tour guide Sabine Möller.
Participants can look forward to a comfortable speed of around 16 to 18 kilometers per hour. The route covers around 35 kilometers for the return journey and around 20 kilometers for the demonstration train. It is recommended to bring food from your own pack bag; registration is not necessary. The crowning conclusion of the event will be the “Bike it! Festival – By bike to Übersee” on the Überseeinsel near the “Kellogs-Quartier”.
Problems with the bicycle infrastructure in Bremen
Although cycling is popular in Bremen, there are serious concerns about the current cycling infrastructure. According to the ADFC climate test, 25% of cyclists in Bremen-Nord feel stressed and half of them say they feel unsafe. The ADFC is therefore calling for more investment in cycling infrastructure ADFC Bremen.
The demonstration on September 7th will take place on an approximately 20 kilometer long circuit through Bremen, which includes both good and less well-developed cycle paths. From car crossings to narrow tunnels, the bike tour will highlight various facets of the current infrastructure while also offering impressive views. However, the event's ultimate focus is to call for reform of traffic regulations to create a safer and more welcoming environment for cyclists.
Climate protection through cycling
The importance of cycling for climate protection cannot be overestimated. A current study by the ADFC highlights that a higher proportion of cycling in the local area of up to 45% could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2035. This potential should be taken into account by expanding the infrastructure, such as ZDF reported.
With an explicit focus on a complete network of safe cycle paths separated from car traffic and the linking of cycle and train, Bremen could become a pioneer in cycling policy. In countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, conditions for cyclists are already much better, and those responsible in Germany are called upon to take the necessary steps to create a welcoming infrastructure.
Overall, the upcoming bike tour is not only an event for bike lovers, but is also an important sign of the necessary changes in transport policy. Cycling together for a better future – there’s something to be said!
