Fatal rear-end collision on the A7: Two seniors die tragically

A tragic traffic accident occurred on the A7 on September 12, 2025, when two seniors, a 79-year-old driver and his 81-year-old passenger, lost their lives. The accident happened between the Schneverdingen and Soltau-Ost junctions when the man drove over the extended exit lane of the Soltau-Ost junction and, without braking, drove into a tractor-trailer whose driver had to brake due to the end of a traffic jam. Fortunately, the 47-year-old tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.

The A7 towards Hanover was completely closed for around four hours during the rescue efforts. Such serious accidents, especially on the A7, are not uncommon. As Tag24 reports, these tragic incidents can significantly affect the traffic situation and lead to long traffic jams and waiting times. The latest information on accidents on this busy route is provided daily and includes reports from the police and fire brigade as well as reports from journalists on site.

Safety on the streets

Despite an overall decline in road accidents in Europe, warning signs cannot be ignored. According to Europarl, thousands of people lose their lives or are seriously injured every year. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of road deaths in Europe fell by 36 percent, but there were still 22,800 road deaths in 2019. 2020 saw an improvement, but these developments were influenced by pandemic-related traffic reductions, highlighting the complexity of accident statistics.

What is particularly alarming is the fact that the proportion of people over 65 among traffic fatalities is continuously increasing, from 22 percent in 2010 to 28 percent in 2018. This could be a reminder to pay more attention to the needs of older road users.

The tragic incident on the A7 once again highlights how important it is to continually monitor road conditions and driving style. We should be all the more aware that every journey carries a certain risk and that consideration in road traffic is essential. This applies even more to our older citizens, who are particularly in need of protection.
