Lürssen unveils Cosmos: The first zero-emission superyacht!
In Bremen, the trend is towards the maritime future: The renowned Lürssen shipyard is presenting the “Cosmos”, the world’s first superyacht to be powered by a methanol fuel cell. This innovative project, which the traditional shipyard is celebrating at the same time as its 150th anniversary, was built in Rendsburg, Schleswig-Holstein. It is a true pioneer in the industry, promising not only luxury but also sustainability.
But what makes the “Cosmos” so special? With an impressive length of 114 meters, the ship can travel up to 1,000 nautical miles emission-free. An innovative drive system converts methanol into hydrogen, which generates electricity in a fuel cell. The big advantage: Methanol can be easily refueled like conventional fuel. This means that no highly compressed or deep-frozen hydrogen is necessary – a clear plus for handling on the high seas.
Elegance and amenities
The “Cosmos” impresses not only with its environmentally friendly technology, but also with its exquisite design. Marc Newson, an acclaimed designer, designed both the exterior appearance and interiors. The yacht features forward superstructure, an extended transom deck with pool and hot tub, and a prominent helicopter landing pad on the bow. Particularly striking are the fully glazed areas behind the bow, which offer an impressive view.
A highlight is the glass dome on the top deck, which houses the owner's office, as well as the private terrace, also known as the Sky Terrace. With amenities like these, travel pleasure is guaranteed!
Performance and supply options
When in operation, the “Cosmos” is barely audible and only produces water vapor and CO2 in small quantities, making it one of the most environmentally friendly yachts. She can spend up to 15 nights in the port without exhaust fumes or noise and therefore meets the highest standards of sustainability. There is a powerful 1 megawatt on board at every moment to meet all hotel needs.
The total cost of the prestigious project is estimated at around 350 million US dollars, which corresponds to more than 300 million euros. The future owner of this luxurious yacht is said to be the Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa.
The “Cosmos” impressively shows that the combination of luxury and sustainability is possible and will probably not only revolutionize the industry, but also the way we think about the future of shipping. It remains exciting to see how the project progresses and what milestones the “Cosmos” will achieve on its intended circumnavigation.
It remains to be seen how developments on board and in the maritime industry will continue. But one thing is certain: The “Cosmos” has already made waves and ushered in a new era.
