Werder Bremen: Injuries and departures before the start of the Bundesliga!
There is great anticipation for the new Bundesliga season, but at SV Werder Bremen the pain of injury-related absences and departures is currently overwhelming. The club was faced with an enormous personnel problem during the summer break. In addition to a massive departure of a total of 13 players, Oliver Deman, one of the few remaining healthy full-backs, has now also been affected. He fractured his outer ankle and will be out for several months. Head coach Horst Steffen regrets the serious injury and sees it as an additional challenge for the upcoming games, meaning Werder will have to rethink its strategy in order to remain competitive.
The first competitive game is already around the corner: against Eintracht Frankfurt, Mio Backhaus (21) will be number one in goal, after former regular goalkeeper Michael Zetterer (30) will make his debut in the opposing goal. Steffen and goalkeeping coach Christian Vander have expressed their confidence in Backhaus, even though a new goalkeeper, Karl Hein from Arsenal FC, is already being considered as a candidate for the future. Loud Transfer market Hein could step in as number one if Backhaus weakens.
Reinforcements urgently needed
Reinforcements are urgently needed at Werder because, despite the eternal search for new players, the club has not yet completed a transfer. The injured players also include Mitchell Weiser (31) with a torn cruciate ligament, Jens Stage (28) with a foot injury, Amos Pieper (27) with a hip injury and Maximilian Wöber (27) with a thigh problem. What is good, however, is that Niklas Stark (30) and Romano Schmid (25) should be available for the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Another player, Leon Opitz (20), could leave the club at short notice for Karlsruher SC after a previous loan offer did not materialize.
The situation at Werder is tense. Steffen emphasizes that the team must stand together to find solutions and bridge the personnel bottlenecks in the best possible way. Amid these challenges, the first game of the season is eagerly awaited. There's a lot to consider, and not just for Werder Bremen: FC Bayern Munich won 6-0 against RB Leipzig in an impressive opening game. This once again illustrates the high competitiveness in the Bundesliga, where every point can be decisive.
Deman's absence will definitely be difficult for the team, as Werder Bremen not only had to adapt to the squad change during pre-season preparation, but also to a large number of injuries that have a major impact on the team's formation.
After the disappointing test match against Preußen Münster, which had to be canceled due to a lack of personnel, it remains to be hoped that the players will quickly find their form and muster the necessary morale to start the new season.
The eyes are on Werder Bremen – can the team find its way out of the valley of tears even with the recent setbacks? The answer to this will be seen next weekend against Eintracht Frankfurt.
