Green Bremen: Pilot project for more biodiversity started!

Gröpelingen is blooming! A new pilot project not only promotes biodiversity, but also confronts climate change. How spot-bremen.de reports, the city of Bremen has launched measures under the motto “Biodiverse Cities”. The goal? To create high-quality green spaces for insects, birds and other animals to reduce the negative consequences of heat islands and heavy rain, which are increasing due to climate change.

The climatic challenges are clear: According to a climate adaptation study from 2023, there is a significant lack of urban greenery in Bremen. To counteract this, numerous measures are being implemented as part of EU Interreg projects and with a funding pot of 5.5 million euros. In the first two years, the first steps took place in the Lindenhof district and in the Riedemann- Reiherstrasse commercial area.

A lively district

400 square meters of sealed area have already been unsealed and planted with wildflowers; a further section of 400 square meters is being planned. These wildflower meadows not only provide a pretty sight, but also provide much-needed food sources for bees and bumblebees. And that's not all: Bremer Umweltberatung also provides advice for private households in order to make a contribution to promoting biodiversity on an individual level.

In addition to these measures, the “Pop-up Green” concept is also planned for Mayor-Ehlers-Platz. Here, 16 raised beds will not only be planted in 2024, but will also be distributed to stakeholders in the district. Another component in climate protection is the planned transformation of Rasteder Straße into a climate street. New trees and climate stones are planned to cool the district and make it livable.

The path to climate-friendly urban development

But the idea of “biodiverse cities” is only part of a larger strategy. How Umweltbundesamt.de supplemented, nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructures lead to greater climate resilience. These concepts aim to design urban infrastructure to meet the needs of citizens while protecting the environment. Positive effects, such as improving air and water quality and promoting biodiversity, play a central role.

This is particularly important when you consider that more than three quarters of people in Germany live in cities, where space for green spaces is often rare. The variety of living spaces not only improves the quality of life, but also offers opportunities for recreation and social encounters. How biodiversity.de emphasizes, natural greenery is crucial to counteract heat stress and mitigate the consequences of heavy rain.

Together for more green – that is the goal in Bremen. With a clear plan, the implementation of innovative projects and raising awareness among local companies, the way is paved for an urban life in harmony with nature. In this way, the Hanseatic city could become a pioneer in the fight against the challenges of climate change.
