Bodes in Bremen: Fresh fish and tradition since 1860!

Bodes, a traditional family business, has made a name for itself in Bremen's old town since 1860. Starting from humble beginnings, it is now in its fifth generation and is a guarantee of fresh, high-quality fish. Thanks to its reliability and excellent offering, the store has gained many loyal customers. The ambience is simple and there is often a buzz at Bischofsnadel 2, where Bodes is located.

The tastings offered by IHK-qualified fish sommelier Petra Bertram Bodes are extremely popular with guests and book up quickly. You can find delicious dishes on the lunch menu every day from Tuesday to Friday, while Monday is reserved for rest. The selection ranges from hearty fish sandwiches to exquisite specialties such as Irish oysters.

A diverse offering

The daily operations of the fish shop include both classic and exclusive fish dishes. In addition to the popular Hallig breakfast, which is served every two weeks on Thursday, there are also changing warm dishes that delight the palate. Hotspots on the menu include the Provençal pasta pan and haddock with mustard sauce and potatoes. The prices are fair, even for beginners like the fried fish baguettes, which are available from just 4.10 euros.

But it's not just fresh products from the market that are on offer: customers are increasingly turning to canned goods, especially pickled sardines. A trend that is clearly evident through the purchase of sustainably caught fish both in restaurants and at home. The company's philosophy is supported by the MSC certification, which Bodes was the first specialist store in Germany to be awarded in 2005. The store can therefore proudly point to the quality and sustainability of its products.

Tradition and innovation

The story of Bodes is closely linked to the fate of the family. In 1960 the business moved to Bischofsnadel 1-2, where the family still operates successfully today. The location has not only proven itself over the decades, but has also expanded when a bistro area was integrated, which quickly became a popular lunch break destination. This is a successful combination of tradition and the needs of modern society.

Demand for sustainable seafood products has increased, part of a larger, global trend. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) plays a crucial role in this by setting standards for sustainable fishing and labeling products that meet strict criteria. Fishermen around the world are beginning to apply such standards - a sign that more and more people are committed to responsible and environmentally friendly fishing.

Bodes in Bremen is not just a fish shop - it is a living part of the city's history and a pioneer for sustainability in fishing. Anyone who has the opportunity to visit the traditional business will not only be impressed by the fresh fish, but also by the warm atmosphere. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., while closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Visit Bodes and enjoy the variety of food and the story hidden in every bite. You can find more information on the Bodes website: bodes.de and our partners below Weser courier as well as Fishing teaching history.
