Mayor Bovenschulte supports Gestra employees for the future!
Gestra's works meeting took place in Bremen today, at which Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte addressed important words to the approximately 400 employees. The Senate made it clear that it fully supports the employees in their commitment to maintaining the Bremen location. Bovenschulte made it clear that the employees and the works council have developed a concrete future concept for the company and recalled that a competitive company is urgently needed in Bremen. This is a key concern, not only for the workforce, but also for the entire region.
“We are on your side,” Bovenschulte assured those present and at the same time called on Gestra’s management to enter into the negotiations constructively. The mayor emphasized that a dialogue was necessary to secure the prospects for Gestra and to shape the future of the company together. This support from the Senate signals how important employees are to the company's progress.
The role of company meetings
The works meeting is a central element of the works constitution, as provided for by the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG). It serves as a forum for exchange between the works council and the workforce and is legally required to be convened at least once per calendar quarter. Employers are not allowed to call works meetings, but they can hold their own events. The invitation to the meeting is solely the responsibility of the works council, and it is important to inform all employees in good time so that everyone can actually have their say.
At today's meeting, all employees working in the company had the opportunity to comment on current developments. It is important to know that although participation in such meetings takes place during working hours and wage entitlement continues, participation is not mandatory.
The future of Gestra
The commitment of the workforce and the clear support of the Senate are crucial to bringing about a positive turnaround for Gestra. The works council is required to regularly inform employees about developments and to hold them accountable. At today's meeting, valuable ideas and suggestions from the workforce were discussed with the aim of anchoring a concrete future concept and thus securing the location's long-term stability. The employees made clear the common goal of maintaining the Bremen location as an important employer in the region.
Today's meeting was not only an information event, but also a sign of solidarity. Mayor Bovenschulte and the entire Senate team rely on active dialogue and constructive cooperation with Gestra's management in order to find the best solutions for the future.
