WiFi chaos in Borgfeld: local office fights against outdated technology!
In the Borgfeld district, expanding the WiFi in the local office remains a major challenge. Despite multiple applications and ongoing criticism, the process in need of modernization is being delayed. The current cable connection proves to be inadequate and causes regular communication problems that severely affect the accessibility of the local office. Local mayor Karl-Heinz Bramsiepe reported on a visit to the Senate Chancellery, during which the effort required to install the WLAN was assessed, but so far no concrete measures have been taken. It is expected that the Senate Chancellery will be able to present a solution within a year.
“The Borgfeld advisory board has already submitted at least two applications to the Senate Chancellery,” said Bramsiepe. But so far the initiative has had no tangible results. In order to improve digital collaboration in the advisory board and citizen service, expanding WiFi would be essential, especially for external speakers at advisory board meetings. Mobile WiFi solutions for the sessions taking place in the Schützenhaus are being considered, as the existing connection at Am Borgfelder Saatland primary school does not offer the necessary stability. The lack of financial resources was cited as one of the main reasons for the ongoing delays.
WLAN expansion in the context of digitalization
The proposals from the Greens, Left and SPD factions to promote digitalization attempt to put pressure on decision-makers. In the last two years, a total of 50,000 euros have been made available to equip the local offices, with around half of the locations already being provided with WiFi or retrofitting is planned. According to the Senate Chancellery, the WLAN expansion should be pushed forward gradually in order to provide all local offices with the necessary digital infrastructure.
A look beyond the city limits shows that the need for free WiFi in public places is also increasing in other cities, such as Berlin. The Press and Information Office of the State of Berlin announced that publicly accessible WiFi will be made available at selected locations in the future. This is particularly required in parks, public spaces and tourist hotspots, which shows that digital networking is a central concern in many cities. Citizens can already take part in a survey to determine their wishes and give feedback until the end of October.
Modern infrastructure for the future
The need for a high-performance digital infrastructure goes far beyond the Borgfeld district. The federal government has recognized that faster internet and access to modern mobile communications standards are crucial for the economy and everyday life. This was clearly formulated in a new law to accelerate the expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks. The regulation, which came into force on July 30, 2025, prioritizes the construction of cell towers and fiber optic lines to ensure that citizens and administrations are reliably connected to digital networks.
Given the pressing needs that became clear during the coronavirus pandemic and in crisis situations, widespread 5G coverage by 2030 is not just a goal, but a necessity. The path to comprehensive digital networking of all local offices, and thus also Borfeld, is a step in the right direction - even if implementation is still a long time coming.
