New district Alte Süßwarenfabrik”: Bremen is transforming!
Big things are happening in Bremen-Hemelingen: A new district is being built on the site of the former candy factory, which will soon offer hundreds of apartments, restaurants and cultural offerings. The construction project called “Old Sweets Factory” not only creates a new living space, but also a modern living environment that reinterprets the old industrial history of the location. Construction work on the building is scheduled to begin on November 1, 2025, with civil engineering and foundation work starting beforehand.
This comprehensive project is being carried out by District newspaper and t online accompanied. Project partners are Edeka Minden-Hannover and the real estate company Justus Grosse. A modern Edeka center with a sales area of around 4,500 square meters will be built in the northwestern part of the area. The shopping center will not only contain deli counters for meat, sausage, cheese, fish and baked goods, but also a café with plenty of seating and a pharmacy in the entrance area.
Design of the new quarter
The city quarter will be developable on approximately four hectares of land and attaches great importance to the well-thought-out design of the outdoor areas. Over 140 new trees and a drainage system for rainwater retention are planned to promote climate protection. Modern building technology, including a photovoltaic system on the roof and heat pumps, will also contribute to environmentally conscious construction. The parking lot will include classic parking spaces as well as charging points for electric cars and parking spaces for cargo bikes and electric scooters.
The entire development in the district is conveniently located: Bremen city center can be reached in about 20 minutes by bike and 15 minutes by car. The area is also well connected to public transport by bus lines 21 and 25. The aim is to complete the entire district by 2030, while the shell of the Edeka market should be completed at the beginning of 2026 and the interior work will take place in spring 2026.
Investments and future outlook
The total investment for the development of the new district amounts to around 250 million euros. This project not only represents Bremen's commitment to urban development, but also in the context of the national urban development policy, which according to... BMWSB acts as a driving force for integrated and sustainable solutions in urban areas. Such construction projects not only promote housing and infrastructure, but also contribute to the quality of life in urban areas and create prospects for all citizens.
The “Old Sweets Factory” project will not only revitalize the district’s bastion character, but will also bring a breath of fresh air to Bremen’s residential landscape. This shows once again that innovative urban development has a good hand for the future needs of the population.
