New building of the Georg Droste School: A milestone for Bremen's education!

There is good news for education in Bremen: On October 13, 2025, the contracts for the new building of the Georg Droste School and the Regional Advice and Support Center (ReBUZ) East were signed. Finance Senator Björn Fecker was present, who underlined the importance of the project. The construction is being carried out by the company August Reiners GmbH as the total contractor, while Immobilien Bremen is responsible for project management.

The Georg Droste School will offer space for students who need special educational support, especially for visually impaired students. “We pay attention to individual needs here,” said a spokesman for the project. Clear structures, strong contrasts and appropriately equipped rooms are planned to create an optimal learning environment. There are also meeting, work and meeting rooms for teachers.

Green aspects and support

The new building on Bardowickstrasse not only has a gross floor area of 7,800 square meters, but also a green roof and a photovoltaic system. These environmentally friendly measures emphasize responsibility for climate protection. Around 33.5 million euros are available for the entire construction project and completion is planned for the 2028/29 school year.

The Georg Droste School is strategically located in the eastern city of Bremen and is attended by students from both Bremen and Lower Saxony. The lessons are organized by trained special education teachers in small learning groups, which enables individual support.

Resources for climate protection

As part of the project, initiatives are also being considered that will make students aware of climate protection. Resources have been developed in collaboration with Greenpeace to help schools assess their environmental footprint. The free CO2 calculator from Greenpeace offers schools the opportunity to identify emission sources and take appropriate measures. Materials such as the handouts “Our School for the Climate” and “Climate Change and Climate Protection in Primary Schools” provide practical ideas for integrating climate protection into lessons and everyday school life.

In addition, schools can participate in the “Schools for Earth” community, which promotes exchange and networking between school stakeholders. This platform helps schools implement and optimize sustainable practices.

Overall, the new Georg Droste School building promises not only state-of-the-art educational spaces, but also an orientation towards more sustainability and environmental awareness in education. One thing is certain: Bremen takes climate protection seriously and invests in the future of its students.
