Osterholz-Scharmbeck: Autumn market with bulls, flea markets and fun!
The last weekend in September is dedicated to the autumn market in Osterholz-Scharmbeck. From September 26th to 30th, 2025, the city will celebrate the 276th edition of the traditional festival. For five days, the market square in the city center is transformed into a pulsating center with rides, stalls and delicious stalls. A very special highlight is the Saturday flea market, which takes place along Bahnhofsstrasse and “Hinter der Wurth” from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bargain hunters can try their luck here, while the set-up and dismantling of the market begins at 6 a.m. so that everything is ready for the first visitors on time.
On shopping Sundays, Scharmbeck's shops open their doors from 1 p.m. and invite you to enjoy a relaxed shopping spree until the early evening. A highlight of the festival is the appearance of the Scharmbeck bull, whose weight of 1,258 kilograms captivated the participants last year. Over 2,000 tips were submitted during bull guessing. Children between the ages of three and eleven can also demonstrate their skills during the “weighing of the calves”. The calf weighed 64 kilograms and over 700 tips were collected.
Entertainment for young and old
There are colorful children's days for the little festival visitors, while live music and DJs on several stages ensure an exuberant atmosphere. Another highlight of last year was the first painting competition, in which 60 children submitted their most beautiful drawing of the Scharmbeck bull. Mayor Torsten Rohde will present the prizes at a festive ceremony. The best participants in the calf weighing will also be rewarded with great prizes: Jonas Walter and Alex Jesgarzewski each received a goods voucher worth 100 euros.
Regional products and competitions
A very popular aspect of the fall market is the farmers market, which features local produce. Here participants have the opportunity to set up their own stands and present their products. In addition to the numerous offers, there are also some attractive prizes to be won. Klaus Goldmann, who won the bull's weight estimation, received an e-bike worth 1,500 euros. Jürgen Garbade and Bianca Hoff also came in first and were able to enjoy voucher prizes.
In addition to the celebrations in Osterholz-Scharmbeck, there are a variety of other autumn markets and festivals in Lower Saxony. For example, the Western-style pumpkin festival is celebrated in Pape's vegetable garden in Braunschweig from September 20th to 21st, and the pumpkin festival on Brande's farm and the autumn market in Westerstede also attract many visitors. On October 3rd there will be a variety of activities in the Gardens Park in Bad Zwischenahn and the East Frisian Pumpkin Festival in Wiesmoor also promises fun for the whole family.
