Better local transport in Huchting: Bus line 52 is facing upheaval!

Tram lines 1 and 8 are currently causing quite a stir in Huchting, a district of Bremen with around 30,000 inhabitants. Construction sites and delays dominate the picture, and residents have now had enough of the constant diversions and disruptions. A central issue that concerns residents and political committees is the future of bus route 52, which connects Huchting with important destinations such as the Roland Center, the Airport City and the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. The Weser courier reports that although a changed route is being planned, this is raising concerns.

Bus line 52 currently runs from Huchting via the airport to the final stop at Huckelriede. In the future, the connection is to be redesigned according to the Bremen 2025 Transport Development Plan (VEP). The new route initially seems promising, as it provides a connection to Oslebshausen train station via the freight traffic center and the Weser tunnel on the A 281. Nevertheless, there is skepticism from many quarters. The Transport Technical Committee of the Huchting Advisory Board reveals that these changes could potentially jeopardize direct access to the airport city and the airport, which would result in longer travel times for Huchting citizens.

Compassionate citizen participation

As part of the partial update of the transport development plan, around 7,700 Bremen residents evaluated ideas for measures in April 2021. This broad involvement of the public not only enables comparison with the specialist committees, but also ensures that citizens' ideas and concerns are heard. Move Bremen highlights how important this participation is for future transport planning. The information collected flows into the VEP's action plan, which is ultimately decided by the political committees.

The partial update of the VEP, which was approved by the Senate in November 2019, is divided into three phases: analysis, measures and implementation concept. The aim is to keep Bremen attractive in the long term and to ensure the quality of life for all citizens. Public transport, including buses and trams, is particularly important in order to meet the needs of the population and promote the transport transition. The Senate Department for Construction and Mobility highlights the future framework conditions and the need for changes in traffic behavior.

The future in sight

The demands of the advisory board for Huchting are clear: maintaining the connection to the airport city must be ensured, and at least with a frequency of 30 minutes for bus line 52. The aim is also to adapt the arrival and departure times to the shift times in the local commercial areas in order to make it easier for employees in Huchting to travel.

Fortunately, the decision to connect the planned medical care center remains unaffected, which is a relief for many. The people of Huchting are now looking forward to further developments in local public transport and hope for a solution that will also take their needs into account in the future. The transport transition is underway, and the transport development plan provides an important basis for this. Now it's time to find the right balance between necessary changes and maintaining proven connections so that everyone gets to their destination safely.
