Werder Bremen strikes: Schmidt from Leeds brings a breath of fresh air!
Werder Bremen has signed a new player: 25-year-old right-back Isaac Schmidt is moving to Weser on loan from Leeds United. The deal is not only pleasing, but also includes a purchase option worth three million euros, as Transfermarkt reports.
Schmidt, who only moved from St. Gallen to Leeds last summer for around three million euros, has had little success with the “Whites”. He played a minor role in the Premier League and only managed 71 minutes in twelve appearances in the Championship. His playing time in the FA Cup totaled 180 minutes. However, Werder Bremen already mutually agreed on this move with him at the end of July, and he will complete a medical check in Bremen on Thursday before signing the contract, according to kicker.
Position and market value
Isaac Schmidt is considered a versatile player who can be used not only on the right side of defense, but also on the left. His current market value is 2.2 million euros and during his time at St. Gallen he was involved in 17 goals in 108 games. An additional reason for the transfer is the increased need in Werder's defense, which has been severely weakened by injuries to players like Wöber and Deman and where Weiser is unfortunately also out due to a torn cruciate ligament. It remains to be seen how Schmidt will perform in the coming weeks, as Marco Grüll is already in the center of the attack, while further options are urgently needed.
Werder Bremen in the transfer phase
However, SV Werder Bremen's summer transfer activities are far from over. The club has already signed five new players in the current transfer window, including only one permanent signing: Samuel Mbangula. All loan players, including Schmidt, come with a purchase option, which means for Werder that they have a sustainable strategy in mind in the future. There are also considerations about bringing in urgently needed reinforcements in central midfield after Jens Stage, an alternative, was no longer available. Kaan Kairinen from Sparta Prague is in the room, and Romano Schmid could also leave the club, with interest from West Ham and Lille, according to Deichstube.
The next few weeks promise to be exciting, both on and off the pitch. Fans can be curious to see whether Werder can achieve their desired goals in terms of expanding and strengthening the squad.
